At the 2022 Basketball Queensland Annual Awards Dinner held at the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre, we celebrated the achievements of our award recipients and paid tribute to six new 2022 Hall of Fame inductees.

BQ Service Awards

The Basketball Service Awards were created to recognise the outstanding contribution members of the basketball community make to our great sport.

This year Basketball Queensland acknowledged eight outstanding members of our basketball community with a Diamond Service Award. The Diamond Service award is awarded to members of our basketball community who have contributed to the sport for more than 50 years.

Female Player of the Year - Jessica Petrie

Your 2022 Female Player of the Year is Jessica Petrie. Jess has taken her game to a new level since joining the Basketball Australia Centre of Excellence in 2021.

She was named captain of the Australia Sapphires team which claimed Gold at the under-16 FIBA Asian Championship and went on to finish fifth at the FIBA World Cup in Hungary. Jess continued her national representation by being named in the under-19 Australian team which competed successfully in India to qualify for the 2023 FIBA under-19 World Cup.

Jess has been a valued member of the Queensland South Girls team and led the Gold Coast Rollers to a State Championship in January.

Jessica’s commitment to her development and outstanding performance makes her a worthy recipient of the 2022 Female Player of the Year Award.

Male Player of the Year - Rocco Zikarsky

Your 2022 Male Player of the Year is Rocco Zikarsky. Rocco was a part of the core group of Queensland players which claimed back-to-back Gold medals at National Championships in 2021 and 2022.

Playing a major role in Queensland South’s dominance at the 2022 under-18 Australian Junior Championships, Rocco then went on to represent Australia at the FIBA Asian Championships where he earned ‘All Star Five’ honours and took home a Gold Medal with the Australian Crocodiles. The team later finished sixth at the under-17 FIBA World Cup in Spain.

Rocco has continued to grow as an elite athlete on and off the court and has been touted ‘the next Australian big man’ for his age group. Due to his success this year, Rocco is a worthy recipient of the 2022 Male Player of the Year Award.

Wheelchair Player of the Year - Hannah Dodd

Your 2022 Wheelchair Athlete of the Year is Hannah Dodd. Hannah is a two-time, two-sport Paralympian and represented Australia at the recent 2022 Birmingham Commonwealth Games.

Hannah has emerged as one of the best low-point female Wheelchair Basketball players in the world. As a starter for Australia she claimed the Silver Medal in Birmingham after taking home the Gold Medal in the Asia Oceania Zone Championships. Hannah is currently competing internationally after receiving her first professional contract in Italy.

Hannah’s success and commitment to excellence makes her a worthy recipient of the 2022 Wheelchair Athlete of the Year Award.

Female Coach of the Year - Alison Mosley

Your 2022 Female Coach of the Year is Alison Mosley. Alison re-established the Queensland Comet’s after a two-year hiatus due to COVID. Bringing together a team of new and established athletes was a test met with professionalism and enthusiasm.

She was later called to assist with the Australia under-25 Devils program, the Australian Gliders, as well as the 3x3 Australian Wombats. Bringing a wealth of knowledge to all programs, Alison took home a Gold in the Men’s, and Silver Medal in the Women’s 3x3 Commonwealth games campaign.

Alison has been pivotal in laying a foundation for success in Wheelchair Basketball and is a worthy recipient of the 2022 Female Coach of the Year Award.

Male Coach of the Year - Sean Carroll

Your 2022 Male Coach of the Year is Sean Carroll. Sean has been a dedicated coach across all levels of competition within Queensland including school, club, representative and state.

Notably leading our under-16 Queensland South Boys to back-to-back national finals, Sean, and his teams we able to claim a Gold in 2021 and Silver in 2022. He has been an instrumental leader for Logan Basketball and Southport State High School, and he has developed numerous athletes who has gone on to represent Queensland and even Australia.

Sean’s dedicated approach to coaching and ability to nurture young talent in Queensland makes him a worthy recipient of the 2022 Male Coach of the Year Award.

Female Technical Official of the Year - Jayme Debman

Your 2022 Female Official of the Year is Jayme Debman. Jayme has been a dedicated volunteer and statistician at Southern Districts Basketball for many years.

Recently selected to represent Queensland at the 2022 FIBA Women’s World Cup in Sydney, Jayme was appointed the bronze medal clash between Australia and Canada. Jayme beyond her commitments with NBL and NBL1 North, has also assisted in training and growing the statistician community at her club.

Jayme’s commitment and success as technical official makes her a worthy recipient of the 2022 Female Official of the Year Award.

Male Technical Official of the Year - Marc Mill

Your 2022 Male Official of the Year is Marc Mill. Marc has been a consistently high performer as an official in Queensland for the last few years.

Earning selection as an NBL referee, he has continued to develop his craft while officiating the best players in Australia. He is a respected referee in the NBL1 North competition and earned selection to officiate the 2022 NBL1 Nationals hosted in Melbourne this year.

Marc’s commitment and professionalism makes him highly respected as a referee by his peers but also players and coaches and makes him a worthy recipient of the 2022 Male Official of the Year Award.

Administrator of the Year - Brady Walmsley

Your 2022 Administrator of the Year is Brady Walmsley. Brady has changed the landscape of Basketball in Ipswich since being appointed as General Manager just over twelve months ago.

Ipswich Basketball has gone from strength to strength thanks to his strong leadership and forward-thinking strategies as well as his passion and commitment to basketball and the local community.

Ipswich have grown to be the ninth largest association in Queensland and since the addition of new club, the Central Bulldogs, has become the third fastest growing associations in the state. The association is now host to a healthy 172 team domestic competition and has strong relationships with local business and government in the region.

Brady has revitalised Ipswich Basketball and represented the sport with distinction in his short time as General Manager which makes him a worthy recipient of the 2022 Administrator of the Year Award.

Chairperson's Award - Barry McLeod

Barry McLeod is receiving the Chairperson’s Award for his commitment to Basketball in Queensland. Barry McLeod has been involved as a referee and administrator in Queensland for over 50 years.

Barry was the first referee to notch 1,000 state league games, on top of his commitments within the NBL and WNBL. He has spent more than 30 years as a referee coach at club, association, and state level, and developed hundreds of referees in Queensland. Barry’s commitment to Brisbane Basketball has been demonstrated through building the strongest and healthiest referee programs in Queensland in the Brisbane Basketball Referee Association.

No task has ever been too big or too small for Barry and his commitment to the game in Queensland is unrivalled. Barry is more than worthy of the 2022 Chairperson’s Award.

Vince Hickey Award - Southern Districts Spartans

Basketball Queensland congratulates Gold Coast Basketball and Southern Districts Basketball on winning the Vince Hickey Award for Champion Association in the 2021 State Championships. It is Gold Coast’s second consecutive Vince Hickey Award and third win in total.

It is Southern Districts tenth Vince Hickey Award and first since 2017. Gold Coast have been the most decorated association in 2021 having earned a medal in every age group with Gold in the U18 Girls; Silver in the U12 Boys & U18 Girls and Bronze in the U12 Girls, U14 Boys &U16Girls.

Southern Districts have been the most consistent association in 2021 finishing top 5 for Boys and Girls in all age groups highlighted by Gold Medals in the U14Boys; Silver in the U16 Boys and Bronze in theU12 Boys.

Cairns were able to jump back up the standings this year finishing in third place after Gold in the U14 Girls, Silver in the U14 Boy sand Bronze in the U16 Boys.

Association of the Year - Northside Wizards Basketball

Your 2022 Association of the Year is Northside Wizards Basketball. The Northside Wizards have gone from strength to strength since the venue development in Zillmere and South Pine.

They have successfully expanded their competition and program offerings which has resulted in significant growth to their participation in the region. This growth has been supported by strong governance and the cumulative efforts of their staff and volunteers to provide their members with a positive basketball experience.

The Wizards continue to demonstrate best practice in all facets of their community from administration to commercial partnerships and even results on the court. The Northside Wizards team have had an extremely successful 12-months and are on track to do the same in 2023.

The Northside Wizards are worthy recipients of the 2022 Association of the Year Award.
