At the 2021 Basketball Queensland Annual Awards Dinner held at the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre, we celebrated the achievements of our award recipients and paid tribute to four new 2021 Hall of Fame inductees.

Diamond Service Awards

The Basketball Service Awards were created to recognise the outstanding contribution members of the basketball community make to our great sport.

This year Basketball Queensland acknowledged two outstanding members of our basketball community with a Diamond Service Award. The Diamond Service award is awarded to members of our basketball community who have contributed to the sport for more than 50 years.

Female Player of the Year - Katie Deeble

Katie Deeble is an exceptionally talented player who spent the majority of the year at the Basketball Australia Centre of Excellence.

Her athleticism, speed and ability to read the game earned her a starting place with Queensland’s Under 20 Women’s team, where she helped led the team to a Bronze medal at this year’s Australian Junior Championships.

Katie was then named in Australia’s Under 19 Gems team that represented Australia at the 2021 FIBA Under 19 Women’s World Cup. Her outstanding performances on the court helped the Gems bring home a silver medal.

To top off a fantastic year, Katie also signed as an amateur contracted player with the Sydney Flames, with Shane Heal naming her a future star of the WNBL.

Katie Deeble is a worthy recipient of the 2021 Female Player of the Year award.

Male Player of the Year - Blake Jones

Blake Jones has had an exceptional year as a young player, starting with his signing as a development player for the Brisbane Bullets.

At the Under 20 National Championships Blake led Queensland to a Gold Medal and was awarded the prestigious Bob Staunton Medal for tournament MVP, for the second consecutive year.

As a member of the Logan Thunder in the NBL1 North competition Blake averaged 16 points, 9 rebounds and 3 assists per game.

Blake then represented Australia as a member of the Under 19 Emus playing at the World Championships in Latvia.

Blake has now moved to the US to study and compete as a NCAA Division 1 collegiate athlete for George Mason University. Blake is one of Australian basketball's next stars and worthy recipient of our 2021 Male Player of the Year award.

Female Coach of the Year - Charlene Notoa (Logan Basketball)

Charlene Notoa has had an exceptional year. As a member of Logan Basketball, Charlene coached the Logan Thunder Under 16 girls to an undefeated SQJBC Championship.

Charlene then led the Logan Thunder Under 16 girls to a 2021 BQ State Championship. Following the State Championships, four of the Logan Thunder players under her leadership were selected in the 2021 Queensland South Under 16 girls’ team. Three out of the four players were bottom age players. This is a testament to Charlene's talent and continued commitment to player development as a coach.

Charlene regularly contributes to female player development at Logan Basketball, delivering girls only sessions to the entire Logan Thunder girls’ program from Under 12 through to Under 18. Charlene continually invests time in her own coaching development and has been rewarded with a successful 2020 and 2021. Charlene Notoa is a worthy recipient of the 2021 Female Coach of the Year award.

Male Coach of the Year - Peter Crawford (Townsville/Brisbane Bullets)

2021 has been an exceptional year for Peter Crawford, taking up his fifth State Coach role with Basketball Queensland. His hard work and dedication to helping shape the next generation of players saw Peter lead the Under 20 Queensland Men’s teams to a National title in May, after claiming silver the year before.

His work with Queensland high performance athletes didn’t stop there, with Peter coaching State Performance Program and National Performance program athletes in Townsville in his role as a State Performance officer.

His exceptional knowledge of the game and brilliant player management skills has not gone unnoticed by the NBL, with Peter recently being named as the new Assistant Coach for the Brisbane Bullets.

Peter Crawford is indeed a worthy recipient of the 2021 Male Coach of the Year award.

Female Technical Official of the Year - Calia Hanks (Northside Wizards)

Calia is an accomplished referees who is focused on developing all our officials - referees, scoretable and statisticians.

She has already started planning for the 2032 Olympics, with a view to developing as many Northside Wizards officials as possible to achieve the honour of officiating at the Olympic games.

She has been a commissioner at several State Championships, an WNBL referee and has demonstrated a willingness to share her knowledge and expertise with the young aspiring referees attending the championships.

Calia Hanks is a worthy recipient of our 2021 Female Official of the Year award.

Male Technical Official of the Year - Andrew Reid (South West Metro)

Andrew Reid successfully managed the transition from FIBA Live Stats to Synergy Stats for the inaugural NBL1 North season and the transition from Courtside to Synergy Stats for QSL1.

This included conducting training workshops both online and in person in the lead up to the season, as well as providing training throughout the season.

Andrew continually looks for ways to enhance the experience for Queensland Statisticians and has been integral in working with OUG to ensure all Statisticians were registered in the platform.

He was then instrumental in developing a Stats logger through OUG so that Statisticians could log the number of games they have stated through the season. Andrew Reid is a worthy recipient of our 2021 Male Official of the Year award.

Vince Hickey Award - Gold Coast Basketball and Southern Districts Basketball

Basketball Queensland congratulates Gold Coast Basketball and Southern Districts Basketball on winning the Vince Hickey Award for Champion Association in the 2021 State Championships. It is Gold Coast’s second consecutive Vince Hickey Award and third win in total.

It is Southern Districts tenth Vince Hickey Award and first since 2017. Gold Coast have been the most decorated association in 2021 having earned a medal in every age group with Gold in the U18 Girls; Silver in the U12 Boys & U18 Girls and Bronze in the U12 Girls, U14 Boys &U16Girls.

Southern Districts have been the most consistent association in 2021 finishing top 5 for Boys and Girls in all age groups highlighted by Gold Medals in the U14Boys; Silver in the U16 Boys and Bronze in theU12 Boys.

Cairns were able to jump back up the standings this year finishing in third place after Gold in the U14 Girls, Silver in the U14 Boy sand Bronze in the U16 Boys.

Administrator of the Year - Joel Mcinnes (Gold Coast Basketball)

Joel has led Gold Coast Basketball from strength to strength in the last year. Increasing the size of the largest association in Queensland and seeing overall success on and off the court.

Through the difficult COVID period, the association has thrived and focused on inclusion. Their inclusion programs has seen their Unified League grow by four teams last year, combining intellectually disabled athletes with able bodied. The association has also seen an increase in Rollerblaze wheelchair program participants, increasing from 25 to 50 athletes.

Joel navigates his role effectively liaising with local council, politicians, sponsors and members to effectively lead the largest association in the state.

Joel has been with Gold Coast Basketball for 33 years, starting as a junior, through to taking on the General Manager role for the last 7 years.

Joel Mcinnes is a worthy recipient of the 2021 Administrator of the Year award.

Association of the Year - Townsville Basketball

Townsville Basketball has experienced a period of growth unseen by the association before as it celebrated its 70th year in 2020. They saw 37% growth when compared to 2019 the start of 2021, triggered by a revamp of its competition structures, a strong digital marketing presence and most importantly the recommendation of the sport from its current members.

Townsville Basketball has successfully revamped large components of its facility including new floors, roofing, emergency lighting and seating through grant funding. They are currently working on two projects valued over $1 million to continue to improve its facility for its members. These improvements include adding new air conditioning, a renovated courtyard to provide a social gathering space and improved change room facilities for its female participants.

Townsville Basketball launched a program in 2021 with the Cedar Gara Foundation to enable disadvantaged Indigenous Athletes the opportunity to play basketball and is working on expanding opportunities including the launch of a midnight basketball program.

The association’s significant growth in participation numbers has been matched by increased coach, referee and volunteer numbers.

Townsville Basketball are the worthy recipients of the 2021 Association of the Year award.
